Ofttimes
when an individual is newly saved they ask someone: “What is the best
book to read first?” The normal answer is “the gospel of John”. Others
would say any of the gospels, some would perhaps say Romans, but few
would say Isaiah. Yet, when as a new convert, Augustine asked Ambrose
which of the best of the sacred books was best to be studied. The
answer was “Isaiah”. There is no other Old Testament books that focus
so much on the grace of God, redemption, and righteous judgment. Isaiah
has been called by several names: “The gospel according to Isaiah”, “The
fifth Evangelist”, and “The prophet of redemption”.

The background. |
|
|
|
i) |
Ever since the Lord told Satan that the seed of the woman would
crush his head (Gen. 3), it has been his desire to rule this
world without God. He had tried to ascend to the heights of the
heaven and rule by displacing God, but it failed. Now seeing
men totally devoted to God, he has to come in and break the
fellowship. |
